[ET] 014: Trust is hard to earn but easy to destroy

A while ago, I saw my client saying to his team:

“Our customer experience is the highest priority. We are here because we stay true to our passion. We said NO to many opportunities. We make the hard call—with the willingness to shut down the business if the experience is amiss.

Because this is a great brand. No shortcuts can ever be taken at the cost of the brand. We will be proud because we’ve all contributed to its making.”

*CLAP-CLAP-CLAP*

He’s right.

When I onboarded this client, I could crush their promotions with a simple strategy. They’ve invested over a decade in building a raving relationship with their following.

Trust makes everything easier.

(and this is also why I find it silly when email marketers take credit for millions of sales when email marketing is only 5 to 10% of the success)

Now, look at where the US is standing right now.

Making enemies with neighbors.

Shaking hands with war criminal.

Trashing the title of the “leader of the free world.”

200 years of trust, gone in 49 days.

I know.

Many Americans are struggling with the cost of living. Egg price. Gas price. Inflation. And they no longer want to support the war.

But let’s look at it from another point of view:

Do you know WHY the Dollar is the world’s reserve currency?

The dollar became the world’s principal reserve currency after WWII, when the US became the leader of the free world. This gave the country the power to borrow money at lower costs, use currency as a diplomacy tool, float enormous debts, and save billions through transactions.

BUT

This power is built on trust.

These benefits come with responsibility.

You fight the hard war.

You support democracy.

You stand for human rights.

Now, that’ trust is gone—forever.

More and more countries will distance themselves from this unpredictable government, concluding it’s time to de-dollarize.

(and down goes the US economy)

AGAIN –

Trust is hard to earn but easy to destroy.

Do NOT make that same mistake (throwing away the trust for a short-sighted win) in your business. You will regret the result.
