the telephone game in email marketing

It’s funny.

Many “best practices” in email marketing are simply gurus teaching little gurus to teach freelancers how to become third-generation gurus.

Wow… that’s a mouthful.

Anyhoo…

Here’s an example:

Most copywriters will tell you that you should write to your prospects like writing to a friend.

(I used to believe this, too)

But the truth is…

No successful brands do this.

(In fact, writing like a friend sometimes actually hurts your positioning)

This is simply a misinterpreted concept.

The idea is…

You should write in a conversational style, using simple words and no jargon, much like you talk in real life.

But three copywriting courses later…

This whole thing became:

“You should write emails like writing to a friend.”

Well…

There’s a better approach.

One that takes into account your brand voice, positioning, and “just enough” persuasion elements… without hitting too hard.
