stop over-complicating email marketing

A while ago, I was working with a 9-figure health company…

(you’d think a brand this size would have everything figured out)

Granted, they were doing many things right…

~ creating partnerships with influencers

~ building relationships with the local government

~ running an insane amount of advertisements (effectively)

Yet the CMO was frustrated as hell.

Because while the majority of their profit came from the email, they couldn’t make a dime without slapping a heavy discount on a flash sale.

Slippery position…

…especially when your company scaled from 15M to 275M in two years.

This was why we connected—to find a way to attract more customers through their email marketing without relying on discounts or flash sales.

Now, I didn’t want to revamp their whole email strategy overnight.

(it’ll never get approved when you have to feed ~1k employees)

So, I started gently –

“Let’s keep everything you’re doing now… and add two simple weekly story broadcasts. I don’t need any discount code. Just allow me to write about anything interesting I found that week.”

The result?

* week 1: 28k

* week 2: 17k

* week 3: 34k

* week 4: 8.4k

* week 5: 18k

* week 6: 27k

…

..

.

This went on for almost a year—generating 8-40k/week with two simple emails—until I left (which is another story for another time).

Here’s the lesson:

Keep it simple.

I didn’t use any ninja hack.

Every week, I would sit down, check the news, find two interesting stories to write about, segue into their product, and close the email with a soft pitch.

No hard selling. No images. No discounts.

(in fact, I think they only have 3 or 4 basic automations set up)

But it worked.

So, stop over-complicating your email marketing.

Cheering for you,
– WYH

PS – no, I don’t recommend stopping at two weekly broadcasts. It was limited for a different reason. I advise starting with four broadcasts a week… and dialing up the frequency if the data makes sense.
