Marketers get a bad rap—and rightfully so.
One trend I noticed recently is:
Many marketers are moving toward a low-ticket, self-liquidating offer.
Why?
“Brah!!! You get to build a list of customers AND don’t have to pay for the ad! BROOO”
Look –
I get it. It’s a sexy mechanism.
If a business can liquidate the ad cost on day 1, the sky’s the limit.
(although most marketers conveniently forget about the actual production/delivery cost when it comes to physical products)
BUT
To make this math work…
You need a gazillion upsells and downsells.
Now, I have nothing against upselling.
I always order fries at McDonald’s… and welcome the creamed spinach at Lawry’s. But I hate how most marketers sell their souls for one additional upsell.
Stop calling your offer a One-Time-Offer…
…if you will hammer the prospects with upsell emails for the next 5 days.
I see this too often.
“On this page, you can get this super sexy, mind-orgasming, too-good-to-be-true one-time limited upgrade for not ten thousand… but ONLY 27 buckaroo. This is the only chance you can get it.”
…
…
30 minutes later
“Hey, if you didn’t upgrade to the VIP option, here’s a link. Expires in 24 hours.”
…
…
3 days later
“This is the LAST LAST LAST LAST opportunity to get the VIP option. The clock strikes zero tomorrow.”
…
…
3 months later
YET
The link still works.
🙄
Every time I experience this.
I unsubscribe and never buy from the brand again.
So do your customers.
