On professional

Tomorrow, we will officially kick-start the E-commerce Holiday Promotion Compendium.

🎉

However, I want to talk first about a very common mistake in owner-marketer relationships.

If you’re a business owner…

When you come across a professional who consistently delivers on time, makes it rain like clockwork, is easy to communicate with, and whom you enjoy working with…

Don’t burn the bridge by asking for a cheap discount.

I’ve seen this too many times.

A business owner fumbles through a dozen freelancers or agencies until they finally find someone that is both easy to work with AND generates results…

Then –

First month, “WOW, you are amazing!”

Second month, “This is really outstanding.”

Third month, “Keep up the good work.”

…

..

.

Tenth month, “Why are we only seeing 35% growth, not 200%? I’m not going to pay you the full commission because you didn’t hit ‘our unreasonable expectations.’”

Look. I get it. You are paying the invoice. But trust me… there are way more businesses than solid talents.

The moment you have cold feet on a commission, you lose the talent forever.

And I guarantee you will regret it.

On the other hand…

If you’re a freelancer/agency…

Stick to your contract.

Don’t overdeliver every month. Don’t discount. Don’t give out “favors.”

No, I’m not telling you to be an asshole… you still have to be professional. That means hitting deadlines, communicating frequently, showing your work, getting results, forever optimizing, etc.

That’s the bare minimum.

BUT –

If you agreed to 30 email credits, don’t do 40 every month.

If you agreed to an asynchronous structure, don’t check your Slack every 10 minutes… or hop on every call.

If you agreed to a revenue share performance bonus, ASK FOR THE BONUS EVERY MONTH (…or else you won’t be able to ask for one in the future).

You’re not “doing your client a favor.”

You are disrespecting your own contract and leading by example.

There’s an old Chinese proverb:

“A small help earns a friend, but a large one can turn a friend into an enemy.”

This is very true in the professional world.

(Ask me how I know)

The reason I want to bring this up is that –

Holiday promotions are the root of all evil.

High stress. Over-optimistic revenue milestone. Exhausted team.

This is when most of the “collaboration problems” pop up.

Remember –

You’re not closing shop after this Black Friday.

You still want to survive, grow, and scale… in the next 3, 12, 36 months.

So, start treating everything with a long-term mindset.

To be continued…
