I Messed Up

Last week, my wife gave me a challenge:

“For the upcoming Chinese New Year, let’s do a full steakhouse dinner at home – filet mignon, baked potato, sauteed mushroom, corn, and spinach.”

Challenge accepted.

The only problem is – I’ve never made creamed spinach before.

So, I decided to give it a try on Wednesday.

I found a recipe online…

…followed the recipe to a T

…and created something that “looks” delicious

(exactly like Lawry’s creamed spinach)

…the taste

…it tasted like the spinach was marinated in salt for 2 days.

lessons learned:

1. you can’t 100% trust a recipe on the Internet (*shock shock*)

2. reduce the salt from 10g to 5g.

(Luckily, Chinese New Year is still 2 months away. I can mess up a few more times before I have to get it right.)

But that’s the interesting part about mastering anything.

You have to put in the reps.

Because you’ll fail (a lot) before creating something good.

It’s true for a tiny side dish, and it’s also true for writing emails. I write every day – because I want to become a “W”riter.

Not an AI monkey that prompts ChatGPT:

“Write a 200 to 500 words sales email for an email marketing service”

And think this copy is good.

(It’s not.)

Here’s my question for you:

Do you want to become a “W”riter?

Do you enjoy spending 3-5 hours every day researching and writing?

Do you think writing email campaigns is your zone of genius?

If not… because you’re a business owner, not a copywriter.

Then, it’s time to get a professional to do it for you.

(just like I’ll visit the doctor, not the WebMD, when I’m sick)
