[ET] 011: Marketing insight from TV

Last week, we studied the Movie Industry.

This week, let’s look at TV industry.

My wife, Tracy, is a die-hard TV fan. She learned how to use a TV remote control before learning to stand. Since we got married…

I was “forced” to watch Crash Landing on You, Wise Doctor Life, Dr. Romantic, You Are My Glory… and far too many to list here.

(don’t worry. I still love you, honey)

Through this experience, I noticed one thing:

Korean TV shows are the best in the world.

The reason?

Korean TV shows do not drag.

They always end the series in 8 to 12 episodes.

Compare that to…

Chinese TV shows airing over 52 episodes… and US dramas having 20 seasons—Korean shows are astonishingly short.

When you have to shorten your content, you face the challenge:

How can I cut out 10% without damaging the plot?

This makes your story tight, clear, and grabbing.

This is a valuable insight for all marketers.

If you can use 100 words, don’t use 200.

Never use more words than you have to… unless you are trying to “delay satisfaction” to build tension.

Your Editing Guideline Moving Forward:

How can I cut 10% word count?

Try it.

This will make your ad/email/advertorial much more effective.
