email marketing is boring

*DING-DING-DING*

“Hello?”

“Hey Yen, sorry for the late reply. I was working with the media buying team, discussing the website design, writing the copy, creating the design… and homeschooling my daughter. So, I couldn’t get back to you yesterday.”

This is a real story:

I took on a new e-commerce client at the beginning of this year. (this is also why I’m not taking on any new retainer clients right now)

They hired me because they want someone to take over the whole email marketing program so that…

(quoting the CEO’s words)

“I do not have to even THINK about email marketing.”

They are growing fast—aiming to 3X their ad spend this year.

They have a great product—the first in their market.

They have outstanding customer support—the CEO and his wife (CMO) open, read, and reply to every customer’s email.

The problem?

They are wearing so many hats that they do not have the capacity to “learn” more about email marketing. Hence, the retention suffers.

This is common in the e-commerce industry.

The brands are hiring because:

~ They don’t know what they don’t know

AND

~ They don’t have time to do it themselves

Boring reasons, right?

No drama. No exciting backstory. No Hamlet seeking revenge.

And my job:

Take the load off their shoulders so that they can stop worrying about the nitty gritty in their email marketing strategy.

In short, make their life easier and give them back their time.

It’s that simple.

They are not seeking bro marketers who yell:

“I WiLl hELp YOu douBLE, tRIpLe, QUadruple yOuR emAIl R-E-v-e-N-u-e iN 30 mINuTEs… OR yOU dOn’T PAy.”

They want boring, simple growth—that’s it.
