As I curl up on the stiff, uncomfortable hospital chair…
…punching out this email with one hand
(because my other hand is stopping the little one from jumping off the bed)
It reminds me of two things:
ONE
The 20-ish, single-preneurs have no idea…
How easy it is to start a business without a kid.
🫠
TWO
Most of the companies are not looking to hire the next Gary Bencivenga.
They know they can’t afford the top 0.01% of talent.
Instead…
They are only looking for someone who’s “professional.”
This means –
~ Has the expertise
~ Communicates
~ Do what they say they are going to do
That’s all.
It’s shocking how many freelancers will guarantee the moon and deliver a coconut… 2 months late… with zero communication.
And when the client pushes back…
The freelancer yells with all his/her ego:
“You don’t understand direct response marketing. There are 359M businesses in the world. You didn’t fire me. I FIRED you. I don’t need you.”
(yes, you do)
(if you don’t need the client, you would have refunded)
The competition is lower than ever—especially with AI disrupting the market.
All you have to do is…
Put yourself out there.
Do decent work.
Be professional.
(like how I’m finding time to manage my clients’ email accounts plus send out a performance review even when I’m stuck in the hospital)
And you are already one of the top 5% of marketers worldwide.
Talk soon,
