The more I write, the more I realize:
Most e-commerces focus on the wrong thing.
~ Split-testing button vs hyperlink
~ Arguing over what words to bold
~ Finding the perfect emoji for your subject
~ Fussing over the email signoff signature
None of these matter in the grand theme.
When creating a successful campaign, 99% of it comes down to one thing. Today, let me spill the beans for you.
RECAP OF THE CHALLENGE [100WSC]
Before we dive in, here’s a quick recap for newcomers:
A while ago, my mentor told me that if you want to become the best in the world, all you have to do is do the thing EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Fine.
Here’s my journey to becoming the World’s #1 Welcome Sequence Guy For Ecommerce with the 100 Welcome Sequences Challenge [100WSC]
(you can read more on my site)
Full disclaimer
These are welcome sequence samples I wrote for a particular brand without first talking with anyone on the team. I’ll be reaching out to the owners to encourage a real test, but I won’t have real data for every flow
With that being said…

The Most Important Thing To think about before writing a single word
Every email can be broken down into four parts:
- Subject Line
- Hook
- Segue
- CTA
Subject line attracts the reader’s curiosity.
Hook captures the reader’s attention.
Segue connects the hook to your product.
CTA tells the reader what’s next.
Most brands focus too much on the Segue… or CTA. But to create a successful campaign (or flow), start thinking in terms of “Hooks.”
Because a great hook carries the whole argument.
It makes the segue as smooth as butter… and gives you ideas on what to write for the subject line.
To give you an example:
I wrote an email selling Pinot Noir in one of the samples below.
During research, I came across the famous line:
“If anyone orders Merlot, I’m leaving. I am NOT drinking any f***ing Merlot!”
💡
That is one great hook.
If you are simple and dull, drink Merlot.
If you are sophisticated and refined, drink Pinot.
