I’m a big anime fan.
Dragon Ball. Fullmetal Alchemist. HxH. Sousou no Frieren. I love them all.
But at the top of all anime…
There’s Hayao Miyazaki. He’s at a different level, and I’ve watched all his films more than a dozen each.
Last week, when I researched email ideas for a Japanese snack subscription…
ChatGPT told me:
Hayao Miyazaki’s Love for Dagashi in Studio Ghibli Films
Legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki often incorporates dagashi snacks into his movies. In Spirited Away, Chihiro receives a small snack that resembles a dagashi treat, offering solace in an unfamiliar world. Similarly, My Neighbor Totoro features scenes of children munching on simple, rustic snacks that reflect the charm of dagashi’s rural origins. Miyazaki himself has spoken about his fond memories of childhood dagashi, influencing his whimsical portrayals.

Tip for Finding Story Ideas
Here’s an email I wrote last week:
Subject Line: The magic of Miyazaki movies
| Have you ever watched a Studio Ghibli movie and felt… transported? Like you stepped into a weird, exotic world where everything felt magical. That’s no accident. Legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki is famous for using dagashi snacks as symbols of innocence, comfort, and childhood wonder. Think about Spirited Away. When Chihiro is lost and afraid, a small rustic treat gives her peace in the chaos. Or My Neighbor Totoro, where children munch on a simple snack that feels more satisfying than any gourmet meal. This is rooted in Miyazaki’s childhood memories. The excitement of picking a dagashi from rows of colorful treats. The joy of taking one bite and brightening his day. He’s not alone. For generations, dagashi has been the go-to snack for kids in Japan. Maybe there isn’t fancy packaging. But it’s all about the nostalgic, comforting flavor. That’s why our 30 Piece Dagashi Box is such a crowd-pleaser. It’s a ticket to the same feeling that Miyazaki tries to capture. >>> Miyazaki Snacks + Your Favorite Movie = A Match Made in Heaven |
This is a perfect demonstration of a simple story email. Find an interesting story hook about a celebrity, anchoring it to a product you want to promote.
And I have to admit…
While I avoid using GPT to write any final draft, it saves me a LOT of time finding interesting story hooks that would be challenging to Google.
In my experience, this is the best way to use AI in copywriting right now.
